Don't expect Microsoft to be able to follow this strategy anytime soon because they make most of their money from software. At any rate, Mavericks is an evolutionary upgrade to OS X that linearly follows the steps Apple began laying with Lion.

This is only doable because Apple is a hardware company - they can afford to give software away for free. Making iLife/iWork free is great, and making OS updates free is even better. If Apple had upgraded everyone from Snow Leopard to Mavericks in one fell swoop, I think there would be considerably more outrage about its usability.I also really like the direction Apple is taking software pricing. It also allows Apple to ease people into new features/designs/thinking. Sure, waiting several years for a new version of Windows makes it a bit more exciting, but more iterations means consumers get updates to smaller things more often.

I'm quickly becoming a fan of the annual OS update schedule Apple is promulgating through its products. They should've saved the new naming convention for 10.10 and just called this one Snow Mountain Lion. Alas, Apple has delivered their most mediocre instalment of "the world's most advanced desktop operating system", and rightly so they've issued it as a free of charge upgrade, if you can call it an upgrade. If Lion was the 'Tick', and Mountain Lion was the 'Tock', then Mavericks is yet another 'Tock'. And if iOS 7 turned out to be the product many of us know it should and certainly could have been then maybe that would explain things. The ecosystem is less open.So is Mavericks a response to Apple's inability to deliver major improvements in hardware, or is it a response to their inability to innovate in the desktop OS space?I mean I get it, the post PC market with the devices and the app store is a lot more lucrative. For Apple though, it is less so because Apple makes the hardware, the OS, and even some applications.
And for the PC platform this still holds to be somewhat true. The OS should always provide a platform whereby application developers can dream up uses beyond the standard hardware. But in some ways we can put it all on the OS. Desktops and servers are merely the fine-tuned offspring of your older siblings' hardware.

If there ever were any omens signalling the maturation of the desktop OS none have been so clear as that of the recent Windows 8 and now Apple Mac OS 10.9 a.k.a Mavericks. But we can't put it all on the OS, the maturation and stagnation is in the hardware for which the OS is intended for. I currently (as of this moment when I'm typing) have a total of 22 apps running in the background, and Safari still runs smooth as silk.Great job, Mavericks! I experienced no bugs, and loved the experience. Mavericks has cleared showed its power on managing tasks. With Windows, this procedure will most likely cause it to crash. The other thing I usually do is open a lot of apps while on my projects since I'll have to research and perform a lot of tasks, I didn't notice a single slowdown or a hit in the performance. When I hide the app, it puts it to sleep, so I can game on Steam.
I encountered minimal slowdowns, compared to my PC's frequent slowdowns, and overall lagged performance, while using Camtasia, a video-editing software also available on Windows. And I find Mavericks' new technologies actually makes my machine overall run faster, then my almost-identically spec'd Windows machine. The way that Mavericks handle its tasks, saves a lot of RAM space, and makes the overall operation much faster. He detailed under-the-hood technologies present in the new Mavericks like App Nap, Compressed Memory among others.I use my Mac mainly for gaming (I know), and video editing.
Having recently made the transition from Windows to the OS X environment, I would say Mavericks is the best type of welcome a new user can have.Craig Federighi, head of OS X, and iOS Software Engineering, took the stage back in June last year. Mavericks is, undeniably, one of the much polished operating systems Apple has released in recent years.
